It was announced yesterday that Jacksonville Women’s Lacrosse standout Freshman Miya Scanlan was selected to play for the Haudenosaunee Nation at this year’s Women’s World Lacrosse Championship in Towson, Maryland.

Come June 30, Scanlan will join some of the world’s top women’s lacrosse players for a week-long tournament to determine the number one nation in the world. The Tournament will begin with pool-play prior to the knockout stages, culminating with the gold medal game on July 9.

The selection comes after quite the Freshman year for Scanlan who recorded 15 goals, four assists, and nineteen draw controls in the Dolphin green and white, while also securing a spot on this year’s ASUN All-Freshman team.

Miya’s top performance of the 2022 season came on a national stage when she notched two goals in JU’s NCAA Tournament Round One victory over Stanford back on May 13. Also in that game, Scanlan caught national attention when she was awarded a spot on Sportscenter’s Top-10 Plays for an incredible behind the back goal scored against the Cardinal.

Now, Scanlan shifts her focus to playing for her nation, something that she is honored to have been chosen to do.

“Being named to the Haudenosaunee National team is such an amazing opportunity to not only compete at the highest level but also to represent my Culture/Nation, and JU. My parents were a big factor along this journey of mine, and I can’t thank them enough. This past year I’ve gained so much more knowledge and experience from both my coaches and teammates and I’m excited to bring it to the world cup,” said Scanlan when asked about the honor.

Interim Head Coach Mike Bedford was also ecstatic for Scanlan when asked his thoughts on the Freshman’s selection to the Haudenosaunee National team.

“We are so excited for Miya and her opportunity to represent the Haudenosaunee National team. She is a tremendous young talent and a great ambassador for the game. Coming off such a tremendous freshman campaign, I cannot wait to watch her compete against the best athletes in the world!” commented Bedford.

Scanlan and her Haudenosaunee teammates get underway on Thursday, June 30, when they open their 2022 World Championship campaign against Pool E opponent Japan at 2 pm. Rounding out the rest of pool play, the Haudenosaunee will take on China on Friday, July 1, Switzerland on Sunday, July 3, and Argentina on Monday, July 4.

The 2022 Women’s World Championship will be broadcasted on ESPN+ with six games being aired on ESPN’s linear channels. The tournament gets underway on ESPN 2 on Wednesday, June 29, when defending champion USA plays Canada in the opening match at 7 pm.
