St. Johns River State College recently issued the following announcement.
The Florida Association of Independent Agents’ Good Works Fund scholarship was recently awarded to SJR State student Kaylee Livingston and SJR State alumnus Angelo Ramos. Livingston, from Putnam County, received $1,000, and Ramos, from Clay County, received $750. These funds offer students a gateway into the risk management and insurance industry (RMI).
According to Livingston, who is currently employed as a full-time bookkeeper while taking her college classes online, “I chose insurance as my business specialization because SJR State’s insurance classes are designed to teach you what you need to know to pass your insurance license exams, and they count as credits toward your degree.”
SJR State also offers a unique RMI specialization that allows students to receive up to three Florida insurance licenses and bypass the related state exams upon completing either the Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree at SJR State. “It’s a really great opportunity for students to take advantage of,” said Business Education director Joel Abo.
While Livingston is considering going into the insurance industry, she is also open to exploring other business-related job opportunities. Abo explained, “Many people think of insurance as just selling, but there are many careers in the industry such as information technology, underwriting, accounting, marketing, actuarial science, operations, claims and legal compliance, just to name a few.”
Ramos received his Associate in Arts degree from SJR State last fall and is currently employed as a patient assistance coordinator, assisting “indigent patients in applying to patient assistance programs that help cover medications they received in the hospital and, by doing so, help the facilities waive those charges from their bills,” he explained. He will be starting his bachelor’s degree program in Healthcare Administration at the University of North Florida in the fall and plans on using his FAIA scholarship funds for books or other school-related supplies that he may have to pay for out of pocket.
The RMI program provides students with the skills and knowledge needed for employment in entry-level RMI positions as well as supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in these areas and need to upgrade their skills. Additionally, the RMI program can serve as an intermediate step toward the Associate in Science degree in Business Administration. The three Risk Management and Insurance courses that students are required to take are Personal Insurance, Personal and Business Property Insurance, and Introduction to Risk Management and Insurance.
