Dolphins take home opener over Edwards Waters

2

Jacksonville University recently issued the following announcement.

Women's basketball brought it home to Swisher Gymnasium Monday night for their home opener against Edward Waters. This one went unexpected but the Dolphins edged out the win 69-64.

JU jumped out to an early 8-0 run, but things shifted quickly in Edward Waters' favor as they held a tight game throughout all four quarters. Coming into this matchup, the Dolphins historically dominated Edward Waters, winning the previous three meetings comfortably. This game, however, was not comfortable for the Dolphins.

Never holding a lead larger than nine, the Dolphins found themselves relying on the bench to provide a spark. DeShari Graham carried JU to the lead at half-time with 10 points and 2 steals in the second quarter alone. This would remain the story for the rest of the game as it seemed that she never left the court after that, finishing with 16 points and 7 steals. Rocking the number five instead of her usual number one, Graham made her mark as she was awarded player of the game.

The Dolphins also relied heavily on redshirt freshman, KayKay Hayes, playing over three quarters in time and scoring a double-double for the first time this season, securing 11 rebounds and 15 points.  However, it was Carmella Walker down the stretch that saved the day for the Dolphins, scoring four straight and playing stellar defense to put the Dolphins back on top and keep them there in the final two minutes.

"We finish a couple of those plays and it's a different ballgame...we have to make sure to continue to get better and continue to grow." Coach Haney positively stated post-game. There is a lot to look back on during film over these next few days as they prepare to travel once again.

JU heads to Tallahassee for its next game on Thursday evening, visiting Florida State at 7 p.m.
