Bolles School recently issued the following announcement.
For the first time in School history, student scientists from the Bolles Middle School Bartram Campus are organizing to enter the Biomimicry Institute’s 2021-22 Youth Design Challenge, a project-based learning experience that challenges student teams to design bio-inspired ideas that can provide solutions to real-world problems.
Working in teams with an adult coach, students have the opportunity to explore wonders of the natural world and create innovations that support a healthier planet. Biomimicry is defined as nature-inspired innovation.
“Your team will take on the role of innovators and work together to apply biomimicry to address a social and/or environmental issue related to a Sustainable Development Goal,” the contest rules explain.
Bolles sixth grade science teacher Elizabeth Body is volunteering this year as a mentor with the annual contest. During the introductory student meeting January 25, she encouraged students to think about local issues in the Jacksonville community that are worth exploring. Students who agree to be on a team will gather during the upcoming school weeks to reflect on opportunities to apply biomimicry to local concerns. Students must submit their designs by April 1. A global awards ceremony will be held in May.
The mission of the Montana-based Biomimicry Institute, which sponsors the annual contest, is to empower people to create nature-inspired solutions for a healthy planet.
