Women's Rowing Caps off 2022 Season at NCAA Championships

2

Following a solid first two days, Jacksonville Women's Rowing wrapped up the 2022 NCAA Championships on Sunday morning competing in the D-Finals in every event.

Kicking off the day, the Jacksonville Varsity Four achieved another program first, beating a team head-to-head in a Finals race for the first time in program history. The win marked JU's third head-to-head victory of the Championships, something they had never achieved once in previous years.

In that race, the V4 posted a time of 07:45.572 which was fast enough to edge out Boston University in what was a heavily contested race that came right down to the wire.

"The four made history for our program beating a team here at the NCAA Championships which is awesome, so I couldn't be prouder of those athletes," commented Head Coach Mike Lane following Sunday's racing.

Following the V4, the Jacksonville Second Varsity Eight hit the water for their respective D-Final and managed to post a faster time than they did in the Semifinals with a 07:06.215. While they did manage to improve upon their own time from Saturday, the 2V still passed the finish line in a hard-fought last place.

The First Varsity Eight then finished last in their own final while unfortunately posting their slowest time of the weekend with a 06:55.040.

"Both the 2V and 1V unfortunately came up a little short, but they also did a really good job of competing. Neither one of them gave up, they raced the whole race and ended up being just a few seconds back," commented Coach Lane on his two eights' performance.

Looking at the event as a whole, Jacksonville placed 22nd of 22 total teams with seven points, while Texas claimed their second National Championship in a row, edging out Stanford on a tie breaker.

When asked about his thoughts on the entire event and outlook on the offseason, Head Coach Mike Lane was proud of the progress his program has made in recent years and is confident that they can now carry that momentum moving forward.

"It was evident from day one this weekend, that we did a much better job just competing than we have ever done. We were much closer (to other teams) in terms of margins, in every single race. For me, I think this is a game changer in terms of the positive vibes coming out of this weekend," said Lane.

"Overall, I am really proud of the progress that we have made as a program. We were able to put the MAAC Conference in a position where we're not the conference that's always last. We're here and were showing the rest of these conferences that we're ready to take some steps forward. So, as I think about the MAAC as a whole, I am really excited to see what we can do as a conference as we continue to push boats forward," finished Lane.

The Dolphins now enter the offseason and will enjoy some much-needed time off before gearing back up for the Fall 2022 season. Make sure to stay tuned here at JUDolphins.com or on the team's social media accounts @jax_wrow all offseason for updates as we move closer to the fall.
