Anatomy Students Explore “Secret of the Skulls”

Assistant Head of Upper School Piper Moyer-Shad '91 recently tasked her anatomy students with a thought-provoking project called "Secret of the Skulls."

The students deduced the age, gender and race of either a real human skull or a plastic replica of a real skull. Then, they presented their findings to the class, explaining how their measurements informed their hypotheses.

“The lesson was an excellent opportunity to discuss ethical issues with the trafficking of human remains prior to laws enacted in the 1980s and 1990s,” Moyer-Shad said. “It also allowed for a discussion about identifying race and how problematic that can be on many levels.”

Moyer-Shad added that the project challenged the students to be comfortable with ambiguity, to trust their research and to think for themselves.
