Celebrating the art of movement and theater through a mixture of dance and song collaborations, Florida School of the Arts (FloArts) presents “Vision of Sound.” The show runs December 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m. and December 4 at 2:30 p.m. on the FloArts main stage located on the Palatka campus of St. Johns River State College. Admission is $10.
According to FloArts dance instructor and show director Jessica Mayhew, “Vision of Sound” offers a unique performance experience for students and the audience. “We’re presenting another fun and creative way to bring song and dance to life, ” Mayhew said. “We’re combining the dance show with the annual musical vocal concert. The mixed-media concert will use live dancing, live singing as well as screen projections.”
FloArts dance instructor Andrea Montez said the show is a physical exploration of what is happening audibly to the ear, which challenges the students to step into a performance that goes beyond the disciplines in which they have become accustomed. “The choreographers are learning how to make the songs come to life through movement,” Montez said. “When it comes to movement, the students are exploring experiences that are intense, and with that comes duality - light verses darkness, happiness verses sadness, challenges verses inspiration.”
The choreography will be performed to Sondheim hits, as well as to popular “Welcome to Wonderland,” “Mamma Mia” and “A Chorus Line” songs.
The dance company cast includes Eric Barnum, Alexis Brockway, Courtney Burnett, Tara Cooper, Elisa Crivelli, Natalie Drake, I’Yonna Harris, Shelby Howell, Teoman Karaagac, Luke Keeley, Maggie Rashaw, Sydney Sheffield, Caleb Urbistondo, and McKayla Whiteside.
The vocal company includes Christi Arnold, Lexi Brown, Libby Burton, Eric Barnum, Elisa Crivelli, Natalie Drake, Jo Fletcher, Shelby Howell, Josue Jorge- Silva, Teoman Karaagac, Reid Norris, JonRay Roman, Maggie Rashaw, Sydney Sheffield, Sara Tierney, and Caleb Urbistondo.
