Recycling Resumes in Clay County After a Suspension

After a suspension that started in 2021 due to a national shortage of commercially licensed drivers, recycling resumed in Clay County on December 5th.

Residents can request bins through the free Clay Connected mobile app for Apple and Android devices, on Clay County's website through the Clay Connected service request platform, or by calling (904) 284-6374. Residents in Keystone Heights should call Waste Management at (904) 695-0500 to request bins. If residents already have bins from prior to the suspension, those containers will suffice. Residents can expect crews to pick up recycling the same day as their yard trash day.

Waste Management crews have been delivering bins for the last several weeks and they are actively working to fulfill the thousands of bin requests that have come in. Residents can put their recyclables in a cardboard box or a trash can for pickup in the meantime. To check the status of the bins, they are welcome to call the numbers listed in this article or make a request on the Clay Connected app or online platform. They should have two bins for recycling.

First bin - plastic containers (#1-7), aluminum, tin, & steel cans, glass bottles, and jars.

Second bin - newspaper, magazines, office paper, cardboard, cartons, and juice boxes.

Shredded paper must be in a paper bag and the cardboard must be broken down two feet by three feet.

Non-acceptable items:

Sharps (needles) - for proper disposal, please get in touch with the Clay County Health Department at (904) 284-6340

Plastic bags and Styrofoam (egg cartons, cups, & food trays)

Chemical containers (oil, pesticides, or pool chemicals)

Broken window glass and mirrors

Food, clothes hangers, hoses, electronics, or plastic toys

If residents have any questions, they can call the Environmental Services staff at (904) 284-6374 or head over to the FAQs here  https://www.claycountygov.com/community/garbage-and-recycling

Commissioners approved rebates to account for the suspension. Residents are only paying for yard trash and garbage collection.

The non-ad valorem assessments related to solid waste on the bill reads as follows:

SWD  SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL MSBU                72.00

SWC  SW COLL MSBU RECYCLE CR $22.70      138.30

The first line is for waste disposal and has been the same rate since 2015. The second is for curbside collection. The $138.30 amount reflects the total assessment less the recycling credit (161.00 – 22.70 = 138.30).

Waste Management will continue to service the seven temporary recycling drop-off sites through December 18, 2022. These containers will be removed on December 19.
