Michael Lipp | Bolles School

Before Spring Break, Bolles upper school science teacher Michael Lipp captivated his students during an engaging, theatrical lecture in which he took on the persona of Galileo Galilei.

Lipp dressed like the renowned physicist and spoke with an Italian accent as he taught his students about Galileo’s undeniable impact on modern science as Galileo himself.

This dynamic, in-character Ted talk was part of Lipp’s Ottenstroer Fellowship, which took him to Europe last summer. While in Italy, he stopped in Florence, Pisa, Rome and Venice to study Galileo. He also traveled to England, where he learned more about Isaac Newton in London and Cambridge.

The Ottenstroer Fellowships identify and reward excellence in teaching at Bolles by providing opportunities for professional growth among faculty. Funded by a grant from Duane and Sue Ottenstroer, the fellowships are awarded annually to members of the Bolles faculty who have had a significant impact on the learning process and have a plan for future improvement. Interested candidates prepare an application describing a project to be funded by the fellowship, usually for summer study or research. Ottenstroer Fellowships are available to teachers at every grade level, and the recipients are chosen each spring by an administrative selection committee.
